Why does my browser keep popping up dodgy adverts?

I have a problem whereby my browser sometimes pops up adverts, mostly for a dodgy debt consolidation company and an anti-virus program I've never heard of(which also does that annoying thing where it tells me it's going to ''scan'' my computer when I haven't installed anything in the first place, and have to press the close button). It's really starting to bug me and it has nothing to do with the websites I visit. How do I take off whatever's doing this?

Why is my laptop so slow?

I recently purchased 512mb of RAM for my hp pavilion ze5600 (Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 2.60 GHz it currently holds 706 of RAM. after I installed 512 mb card i notice little or no speed change when opening programs or files. I have McAfee virus scan installed as well as anti spyware software. I run these daily, but it seems my laptop does not run as fast as it should with all the RAM in it. My computer is fully updated as well (windows xp). Please help, I appreciate any feedback, thanks!

I would advise getting a new laptop from dell. Your laptop specification is very weak. Intel celeron. wow! Get a laptop with at least a core duo processor, at least 1gb ram and an ati or nvidia video card. Windows Vista is here and your laptop cannot even pinch it talkless or running it.

If I'm understanding you. You originally had one 256MB RAM module and a second 512MB Ram module. So you replaced the 256MB RAM module with a 512MB module, thus making the total amount of installed RAM 1GB. Is this correct?

There is a huge misconcetion on RAM. Just as there is with hard disk space and deleting programs. I got best answer on a simlar question and what I wrote is below. But basically RAM only provides a larger operating space for you to run multiple and large programs at the same time without affecting system performance.

If the disk contains only MP3 files, then it is not infected; NAV is causing a false positive. I could have been able to answer better, had you specified which files were reported as infected and which particular viruses they were reported to contain. In any case, make sure that you're using the latest update of NAV.

If there is something else on the disk and if it is indeed infected, then the best solution is to copy the non-infected files to a new disk.

Copy the good files somewhere, and burn a new CD without the infected files.
Copy or back up the files of your cd by copying and pasting it in a folder(my documents/ desktop or any desired place in your hard disc) and virus scan it first by right clicking it %26 press ''scan for viruses'' or you can do it manually by selceting the desired location you want to scan so it will be clean before burning it in your cd( use a new cd by the way). hope my simple tip can help you

Because the viruses are writed on your CD you cant delete them so copy your good files that not infected then pathway your CD.

I have a simple question to ask. You see I had norton anti virus installed and I thought everything was good. Then one day it said my scanner couldn't run a full scan. Okay, I'm in a computer crisis right now and need the right directions to take because I'm afraid to make any wrong turns and make things worse. My computer is slow basically, it's infected with viruses. It takes pretty long just to have my computer startup ready and I don't think my desktop is at all full of icons so I don't know what could be the problem. Plus opening the ''My Computer'' file also takes quite some time... I never had spam in my inbox ever until now.

I've noticed that sometimes a process called AppSvc32.exe in Windows XP is running in the background despite having no other programs running. It takes up to 50% of my CPU sometimes and if I am running a program causes my programs to run very slowly. I've run a full system scan using Nortan Anti-virus which didn't find anything.

So I am perplexed as to what could be causing it.

It's part of Norton AV. It can be disabled in the preferences, but security is lessened if you do.

However, personally I'd recommend using something other than Norton. If you're going to PAY for an AV, it should at least be better than the free ones available. I recommend Kapersky or BitDefender. If you want free, go with AVG or Avast!.

By replacing Norton with one of these, you should immediately see a significant boost in performance with active scanning enabled.

ok you should not have a dsl modem hooked to your computer from your modem to the wall or modem to you computer and all the phones and the fax machine if you have one all need to have a dsl filter on them if you have a satilite receiver plugged into the phone line that could be slowing it up to. But if your head of the house only use the least amount of phones to get by if on the net and if not useing the tv unplug the phonelive freom the receiver if it is connected for pay-per-view channels and reconnect after your done. that may help if none of that works check your up/down load speed and if it saids you should be running what it displays then if it is that is your speed the isp is giving you if your getting a different number then what they tell you you might call the phone company to come out and check the phone wire from the pole to the house and then it is your job to check it from the basement to you computer . well umm that is about all I can tell you I wish I knew more to tell you I wish you luck.

I am a computer tech by trade, but am not sure how safe or unsafe yahoo's email system is. I don't think that you can get an anti-virus program to scan yahoo email because it is web-based. But, I would generally say you don't need to worry about viruses and such with yahoo. It does have the attachment scanner built-in, in addition to this, I would imagine that yahoo has on their mail servers virus detection software that scans all incoming and outgoing email.

Anti-virus programs like symantec will scan outlook or any other POP3/SMTP mail programs but not web-based email.

In addition to this, you shouldn't open any mail from people you don't know, just delete it or mark it as spam. If you do get a virus or trojan horse, if your anti-virus software on your computer is up to date, it should be able to detect it and get rid of it in most instances. It is important to keep your virus definitions up to date your anti-virus software is only as good as it's virus definitions file.

Yahoo is Http, last time I used it it was pop and smtp as well but they stopped the smtp so you could only send e-mails from internet explorer. Yahoo has its own built in virus checker so providing you access the e-mail through your browser yahoo will pick it up.

Besides that norton will pick up a virus if you download it to your computer.

Help eliminate Virus/Spy-ware sound clips?

Hi, my computer randomly plays these strange sound clips. Sometimes it happens when the computer is idle; other times, it happens when we are working on documents or surfing the net. There seems to be no rhythm or rhyme (all pun intended) to them.

These are the clips: ''She bangs (like william hung or Ricky Martan)'', ''ouch'', and ''audience applause'' and they last for just a couple seconds.

I have tried to scan with norton virus scanner and AVG virus scanner. I have tried spybot search and destroy and norton anti spy. So far I have not detected any viruses or spyware and my computer is running well. If anyone has heard of these sound files or something like them, please let me know what I can do.

what is wrong with your pc that you are trying to restore it??...you have to identify the problem to get a reasonable solution...if it is trojans adware malware...stuff...try superantispyware and spybot search and destroy...if it is LOP adware ..that is tougher ...but it can be dealt with...try hijack this..for LOP adware....and if that doesn't help you may need to re-install the O/S
use a different restore point. the one your trying to use is probably broken.

What OS do you use? You should at least have half a gigabyte of ram. Defragment your hard drive and run a spyware scan.
If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

About 3 months ago, I download the free trial of Kaspersky Anti-virus. I did a scan and as soon as it found a virus, my computer crashed. I had to reformat my entire computer (system restore was corrupted). Yesterday I downloaded the free trial again (I made a checkpoint on system restore). After I downloaded it, it automatically did a scan when I opened the program but it crashed my computer within minutes. I restored my computer though. Why won't it work on my computer.

Okay, so I scanned using Norton Anti-Virus first, and found 3 virus's in my temporary internet folders. I downloaded AVG and scanned, it only found 2 the next time. I then scanned AVG and Norton for the 2nd time, andnothing appears. Norton keeps saying that Hacktool.rootkit keeps trying to attack or something, so it comes up with a warning message. Firstly get rid of one of the antivirus programs. I would recommend keeping Norton as it has an excellent pick up rate.

Now download Hijack This! from www.merjin.org and scan ure comp in safe mode using that. then upload the log to the trend micro forums and see what the folks there say.

Download a good firewall as well, like zone alarm and then block all internet activity and see what tries to access the net.

Also download Ad - Aware SE or Spyware terminator to get rid of any spyware youve got.

The reason AVG detects only 2 is because trojans/hacks are created in order to hide from certain virus scanners. And when nothing appears after scanning it again, trojans have the ability to move to certain files and corrupt others... They hide and slowly corrupt other files.

While you were typing a program started to run that ate up memory(or the program that started to run had an error and was trying to recover from the error). Try find out wht program thats causing that by comparing the program tha'ts running before and after the click, by bringing up the task manager then look at all the processes that's running. You can access the task manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Check inside your Email list of friends, sometimes bad address from spam sites gets in there. if you see an email address that you didnt put in there, DELETE IT! That should help.

I had the same problems, until I couldn't open any program. I was regularly defraging with the Dell utility. But I paid $200 to find out that my hard drive was badly fragmented. My tech is tech support for the local university faculty. He had me download (buy) Diskeeper, and problems solved. I'm thinking that I was able to use Diskeeper for a few days before deciding to buy. It is highly recommended software. Good luck!

I have an acer aspire laptop with vista,

my speakers work fine, all the little beeps and everything for the OS

but i cant play any music from hard drive/cd

and any programs that access music from my hard or a cd dont play either (audio players, games, etc)

Ok so every time i scan my computer with a anti-spy ware and it reaches c:/ System Volume.. My virus detector goes crazy telling me that there is a virus call spring.generic/chepvil!generic there. 3) Get a firewall like ZoneAlarm.

4) Do an online scan with www.BitDefender.com .

If you continue to have problems, post another question. You might need to remove registry keys.

I have norton anti-virus on my computer, and I have ran some scans and it just says that two non-viral threats remain. However when ever I opened internet explorer Norton would send me several messages stating I have viruses such as, Trojan Vundo, Trojan Horse, and Trojan. Low Zones. I have also been experiecing pop ups and new whole ad pages pop ups. The regular pop ups are suggesting that I scan my computer with Win Anti Virus Pro 2007. Look at your systray (bottom right corner). How many of those applications do you actually use? Uninstall ones that you're sure you never use. Check the start up folder. Do you actually need those applications running at start up? If not remove them from the start up folder. Do a bit more research to find out how to remove more start up applications. Does your antivirus cover spyware? I think Norton 2006 probably does. In which case you don't need Spybot as well. So remove it. Remove software you don't need or at least make sure it's not running in the background and your computer will speed up. If you're not downloading or installing new programs you can disable your antivirus. In short make sure that you only run the applications that you need. Then consider upgrading the hardware.

Okay so my laptop is being totaly retarded.

I charge it everynight, and when I go to use it the next day its like I nevr charged it. I keep it plugged into the wall at all times, and I get about 10 minutes of uninterupted time on it, and then it says ''low battery, switch oulet or to outlet power'' and then it will shut off. I've changed the settings and there is no ''outlet power'' option. First question is how old is your battery? Because it sounds like you need a new one. I would start there...if you take it to a techie that is what they are going to tell you....try a new battery. If it is not the battery then take it to a techie ... at that point you might be better off just looking into the purchase of a new lappy...if it has anything to do with the conections between the battery and the laptop then i would probably be cheaper to get a new puter.... again alll of this depends on how old the laptop is...hope this helps.

I installed the newest version a few days ago and my computer slowed down A LOT and started freezing up randomly. I uninstalled it and ran various virus/spyware scans (it found loads of viruses!) but my computer is still really slow. It can. Remember, you're sharing your hard drive with everyone on the internet, so the can copy your files and slow down your computer. Also, the likelihood of some kind of malware being downloaded is very high. Then when you factor in the possibility of criminal charges and lawsuits, it seems cheaper to buy music instead of stealing it.
I got lots of problems from Limewire at first. It is a large program and it does slow down your computer a lot! Especially if you're trying to browse the internet while Limewire is running. There is a pretty popular bug with Limewire (don't know what it's called) that causes Limewire to just start up by itself. I found that if I reset the setting to default, it takes care of it. Also, I have no problems with music and videos when I only download the extintions that I am familiar with: mp3, wma, etc. And, I never ever down load any programs. I'd say 7 out of ten put something onto your computer!

There were no bad signs before I left for school this morning. When I got home, I powered up the laptop, and iTunes started up like it usually does when the pod is connected so I closed it out. I opened up Firefox and checked email. A few minutes later I tried to open Skype and I got the following error:

It gave me the same error for several programs, including iTunes when I tried to open it again, which seems like the virus or whatever it is affected kernel32 after powering up the computer.

I opened up the task manager and found a sneaky little exe, kK1joiNMl.exe, running at about 3MB of mem usage. I shut it down, but I can't find the file on the system. I did find KK1JOINML.EXE-1023D4F0.pf in WINDOWS\Prefetch. Should I delete the prefetch file? I ran AVG anti-root kit and virus scan, and they've turned up nothing.

Is there any way to cure this or should I just reinstall?

Dell Inspiron 6000 Booting Trouble?

This morning when I tried to boot my laptop (Inspiron 6000), it gave me the error message something along this lines: ''Cannot find booting device on internal hard drive.'' Then it says to press F1 to try to boot again, and F2 to go into Utilities. I have not messed with the hard drive that I know of. I have the TV show downloader Miro, and I downloaded seven TV episodes in one sitting. Your hard drive has either crapped out on you or has unseated. Open up the door where your hard drive is and make sure it has not come loose. You could also try F2 and load up in safe mode.

This is because SpyBot quarantines are protected zip archives, containing the original spyware. Superantispyware is able to scan these archives, but since it is password protected it cannot clean them, so the best way is to quarantine the whole archive.

The best way to prevent this is to add the SpyBot quarantine folder to the Excluded Folders list

- Click on Preferences,

- then on Scanning Control

- and then on Manage Excluded Folders

- Click on Add and locate the SpyBot Quarantine folder, normally located at

Super probably detected the spyware signatures in the SpyBot S%26D quarantine files, and reacted accordingly. To avoid having the same thing happen in the future, you should have SpyBot delete malware outright, instead of just quarantining the offending files.

EDIT - I like cybertop's answer better than mine ... you should take his advice and tell Super to leave SpyBot's quarantine folders alone, and vice versa. Excluding the program folders might be a good idea as well.

You can get free spyware remover from AVG also Rootkit remover as well.
AVG anti virus free is only good at viruses but not other malwares such as spywares. Better add an antispyware. First try spywaredoctor free edition. update it then scan. Then try installing threatfire free and spywareblaster.
Search for Ad-Aware 2007, download and install it. Check for definition updates after installation and then run a system scan. Be sure to check for updates weekly and always before a scan.

Thats spyware for sure....I recommend trying Spyware Doctor it is the best spyware/anti-virus software I have ever had for a quick scan. The anti-spy you have now is probably just too cheap to catch it and not in depth enough....good luck
It is what you call a SPYWARE. and you're infected with one. Anti-virus softwares usually do'nt detect spywares. please do install a separate ant-spyware on your PC like kaspersky's spyware detection tool.

I have already run several bspyware, adware, virus, %26 rootkit scans. These have all checked out clean. I've cleaned out all the cookies and temporary files. I've defragmented. I have an abundance of free disc space and RAM. Using Windows XP pro. Office 2003 pro. I do have several items loading at startup, but that shouldn't effect opening and closing programs or webpages should it? Could it be my anti-spyware %26/or firewalls? I haven't tried running anything with these items disabled yet. Should I do that first? Any sincere information will be deeply appreciated. No smarty-pants answers please, only serious replies. A couple of things come to mind:

What kind of antivirus are you using? Norton, Panda and McAffe are known for slowing down your system badly. They can cause that behaviour.

Also, make sure you are not running two antiviruses at the same time. That is just a big no no.

Make sure you are not running two firewalls at the same time either.

Second. Do you have Internet Explorer 7 installed? Keep in mind that it might have been forcefully installed via automatic updates. The good people at Micro$oft have decided that everyone likes IE7 and force it into us.

If it is so, uninstall it and see what happens.

Recently, when i on my computer, an error message pops up and says that it is unable to open csrss.exe(something like this). I scan for virus and found that there was a virus on csrss.exe. My avg anti-virus removed the file. Now, when i start my computer, an error message pops out ''Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again.'' Can anybody tell my what is the problem and how do i solve it?

this is a script that loads the csrss.exe with virus when you start up your computer. now that it is cleaned by AVG, then Windows cannot find it anymore, that's why you get the pop up. To remove it, open Registry Editor(start%26gt;run%26gt;regedit) click edit, click find, enter: c:\windows\config\csrss.exe then if it finds an entry delete it. Press F3 to find another and exit if there's no more.

Nope... I was a rune-head for 2 years and I was fine. It may have been a fluke. If it happens again, crack open the case and blow the dust out (I like using a vacuum that blows air instead of sucking it, but a compressed air can works too.

From what I know, RuneScape can't give you viruses. Just playing wouldn't do anything. Also, the fact that the scan said there weren't any viruses pretty much proves that there wasn't a virus.

Sometimes computers just crash. It might have been a failed driver or something, but unless it keeps happening, don't worry about it.

Not likely. Any new software or hardware has the potential to cause problems on your pc and this can result in the system crashing. If you continue to have problems you should remove the game and see if this solves if the problem ie no more crashes. If it does then you can be pretty sure that the game is causing the problem. Next you should install the game again and if you continue to recieve problems report it to the software vendor to see if their is a patch,.

Sometimes if you go to a page it automatically makes it your homepage... go to Tools on the toolbar above, then click Internet Options. Your homepage address will be there and you can change it to whatever you want it to be (just be sure to click ok before you exit out).

Also be sure you go to the Norton Anti Virus website and get your computer checked, updated, and cleaned out.

If you have a spyware program in the options or settings sometimes there are places to set your home page. It could be set on their home page. You might check it and change it back to your home page. You can go into windows control panel under internet options and change your home page there. If you have windows xp you can change browser under the install /uninstall and change settings menu. But you can lose files or emails this way. If you don't care to lose emails and contacts switch browsers and then switch back and this can allow you to get your home page back.

my internet has been completely messed for the past 3 days!! The problem is that one of the plug-ins or extensions has a bug in it, which causes firefox to abort when starting.

When you uninstall firefox, these extensions are not removed and so poison firefox when you reinstall it. You need to uninstall firefox, remove the following directories, then reinstall firefox.

Okay, so I was surfing the internet when something download itself on my computer. It made itself one of my toolbars on my internet explorer. Now I have pop-ups that ask me to download something because a virus/worm has been detected. I haven't downloaded it in fear that it's a Trojan virus.

I get these three anti-spyware icons on my desktop each time I log on and they appear on my favorites menu. I delete them when I see it, but it never stays off.

Whenever I open up internet explorer now, they change my homepage to an anti-spyware page telling me to download its program. I delete it and change my homepage, but it simply will not change after I have moved to another web page.

I used Norton AntiSpyware Scan to do a full scan; it scanned everything and said there was nothing harmful. I also used Windows Defender, recommended by a local computer expert that came to my school. I stopped the Windows Defender midway. It said there was an harmful object in which I removed.
